Compulsory Basic Training (C.B.T) is a course for new riders wanting to ride a moped or motorcycle. It is a legal requirement, and must by law be taken by any new rider before they can ride a motorcycle or scooter on the road with L plates.
The course is aimed at complete novices with no experience at all. Our instructors are experienced and can take you through all the elements, so you can learn in a safe environment at your own pace.
What age do I have to be?
How much does it cost?
How long does it take?
Typically the day starts at 8.00am to around 5.30pm and a high percentage of students complete the course in 1 day, but please remember that different people do learn at different speeds. If you need to have more work on any element you can always return to carry on another day (not included in the price). Your safety comes first at all times.
At the end of the course you will be given a CBT Test pass certificate, also called a DL196. The certificate lasts for two years and allows you to ride a learner bike or moped on the road and also enables you to take your full practical test.
What do I need to bring with me?
You will need your provisional licence (only the photocard). You also need to be able to read a number plate at 20.5 metres. Suitable clothing is also required (we provide helmets, gloves and waterproofs) and you will need a basic understanding of the Highway Code and road signs. Do remember the course is for total novices so don’t worry if this is your first time on a bike!
